House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan lays out sweeping agenda for judicial reform

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan has proposed a comprehensive plan for judicial reform. The aim is to address what he sees as the overly political actions of federal judges that block key executive orders from President Donald Trump.

• Injunctions Against Trump Policies: In about 65 days of Trump's second term, federal judges have issued at least 15 nationwide injunctions against his policies, which Republicans argue are politically charged.

• Judicial Reform Proposal: Jordan plans to pursue three key reforms:

1. Limit on Nationwide Injunctions: Legislation is being worked on to ensure that injunctions issued by federal judges only apply within their specific jurisdiction and not nationwide.

2. Use of Appropriations Power: Congress will explore ways to influence judges deemed too activist through budgetary control.

3. Oversight Hearings: Jordan’s committee will conduct hearings into judicial conduct, specifically focusing on judges obstructing administration policies.

• No Rogue Rulings Act of 2025: A bill that would restrict federal judges from issuing broad nationwide injunctions has been approved. It aims to provide a new process for cases with challenges from multiple states.

• Specific Cases: The case involving Judge James Boasberg concerning Trump's use of the Alien Enemies Act to deport members of specific gangs has drawn attention. The administration argues his rulings overstep executive authority.

Jordan's initiative seeks to reshape the judicial landscape, targeting what he perceives as judicial overreach that impacts the executive branch's powers. The reforms and oversight initiatives reflect Republican frustrations with recent judicial actions against the Trump administration.
