Democrat Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs Under Fire After $339 Million “Disappeared” from State Budget as Hobbs’ Budget Director Mysteriously Resigns

Arizona State Representative Alex Kolodin criticized Democrat Governor Katie Hobbs over the disappearance of $339 million from the state budget. He questioned whether funds were being misappropriated or if there were mistakes, noting the lack of matching figures. Hobbs has faced scrutiny before for her handling of large amounts of money. Previously, her Office of Tourism awarded a $700,000 contract for a new state logo to a company linked to the agency’s director, drawing accusations of corruption from State Senator Jake Hoffman.

Following these issues, Arizona Democrat Attorney General Kris Mayes announced a criminal investigation into Hobbs for possible bribery and fraud. Hobbs had accepted significant donations for her inaugural events from a dark money group, which some believe influenced state contracts. Kolodin mentioned that this investigation is ongoing and points to a potential pay-for-play scheme involving Hobbs’ inaugural fund. He suggested that the missing funds could be connected to this issue, highlighting the need for further investigation into the budget process during Hobbs' administration.

Kolodin sent a letter to Hobbs expressing his concerns about the state budget, noting the Legislature's surprise at being informed of multiple insolvent agencies needing a bailout. He stated there were issues with the expansion of Arizona's Medicaid agency, which Hobbs allegedly approved without informing the legislature during budget negotiations. Kolodin emphasized that the expansion was not accounted for in the budget, suggesting a lack of transparency on Hobbs’ part.

Kolodin questioned Hobbs' leadership and suggested that her budget director's resignation coinciding with these discoveries may indicate a larger problem. He expressed difficulty distinguishing between malice and incompetence in managing the budget. He raised the issue of an additional $60 million obligation for Arizona schools that Hobbs failed to acknowledge during budget discussions.

Kolodin posed several questions to Hobbs, asking why she misled the legislature about spending plans, why her budget team did not cooperate with the legislature on known costs, and who might be benefiting financially from the situation. He called for a formal investigation into these issues, indicating the need for legislative support to pursue this further.
