Joe Biden’s Failed Foreign Policy Legacy

With the Biden-Blinken foreign policy era ending, it's important to assess their influence. Despite political opinions, both Biden and Blinken performed poorly regarding U. S. foreign policy, failing to act effectively from both neo-conservative and realist viewpoints.

One notable mistake was sending American troops to Haiti in July 2021 after the assassination of the Haitian president. Although there is no large American presence now, the U. S. supports a troubled Kenyan-led peacekeeping mission, marked by corruption and violence. Biden’s involvement includes backing a new UN mission.

The withdrawal from Afghanistan in August 2021 showcased serious flaws. While withdrawing troops was necessary, the chaotic execution resulted in leaving behind equipment and a rush to evacuate civilians. The withdrawal plan started under Trump, but Biden’s management faced criticism.

In terms of Ukraine, Biden struggled to prevent Russia’s invasion while attempting weak diplomatic efforts. He did not engage with Putin directly and implemented sanctions and aid to Ukraine, overlooking essential Russian concerns, which may have escalated tensions. Despite $113 billion aid to Ukraine, Russia has seen battlefield successes.

Regarding Iran, Biden criticized Trump’s strategies yet failed to re-establish negotiations, often siding with Israeli interests. His attempts to renew the nuclear deal did not succeed while maintaining stringent sanctions against Iran.

Biden maintained and increased U. S. troop presence in Syria, suggesting efforts to counter the Assad regime with little clarity in rationale. Events unfolded in late 2024 when rebel groups, previously supported by the U. S. , overthrew the Assad government, creating more chaos.

The Biden administration adopted a tougher stance on China, moving away from previous strategic ambiguity concerning Taiwan. Increased tariffs and military agreements have heightened tensions between the U. S. and China, culminating in Biden's explicit promise to defend Taiwan against a potential invasion.

One significant failure for Biden has been the inability to manage Israel's aggressive actions in Gaza and surrounding regions. While Biden voiced support for Israel's right to defend itself, he provided substantial military aid during severe conflicts, including attacks that harmed many civilians in Gaza.

Despite these failures, Biden did achieve some positive results, such as proceeding with the Afghanistan withdrawal, halting support for the Yemen conflict, and addressing British control over certain territories. However, these accomplishments pale compared to the broader negative impacts of his foreign policy decisions. Ultimately, Biden can be remembered for deepening ties between Russia and China, neglecting Iran, fueling the Ukraine conflict, and endorsing Israel's actions in Gaza.
