Immigration Raids of Mississippi Food-Processing Plants Yield 680 Detainees

U.S. immigration officials raided several food-processing plants in Mississippi on Wednesday, detaining 680 people suspected of being in the country illegally in what Immigration and Customs Enforcement called the largest single state worksite enforcement action.

The agency said it collaborated on the operation with the U.S. attorney's office for the Southern District of Mississippi to raid seven sites across the state.

In Morton, Miss., Koch Foods, one of the largest poultry producers in the U.S., had one of its facilities raided, said Gerald Keeton, Morton's mayor.

About 45 minutes away, in Canton, Miss., ICE agents arrived at a Peco Foods plant at around 7:40 a.m., said Mayor William Truly Jr. Peco Foods, a large poultry producer that employs approximately 2,400 people nationwide, had about 125 employees apprehended by immigration officials, Mr. Truly said.

The detainees were taken by bus to a military base in Flowood, Miss., according to Mr. Truly.

Mr. Truly said that some were released with ankle bracelets and placed on house arrest while they await their immigration court date.

Mr. Truly said he wasn't informed of the raid ahead of time.
