Democratic race for Speaker turns nasty

The race among Democrats to be the next Speaker of the House is turning nasty.

Scott Wong and Mike Lillis are reporting that at least 17 Democrats have banded together and are committed to blocking Pelosi's bid for Speaker on the House floor during the final vote early next year.

CNN asked Rep.-elect Jeff Van Drew if it was something he was worried about in casting his vote for Speaker.

> Pelosi will need 218 votes to be elected Speaker when the entire 435-member House, including Republicans, votes on Jan. 3.

On Wednesday, Pelosi met with Democrats in the Problem Solvers Caucus, who are withholding their support for any potential Speaker unless the candidate supports rule changes, in writing, that empower rank-and-file lawmakers.

Democratic officials in the state allegedly gave altered election forms with false information to voters to fix issues with their absentee ballots.

More from campaigns and politics Congressional Republicans' biggest legislative accomplishment - the new tax-cut law - didn't end up saving the GOP majority in the House Sen. Jr. isn't ruling out a presidential run Sen. tapped to lead the Democratic Senate campaign arm.

Marcia Fudge under spotlight as Pelosi Speaker fight heats up
Pelosi allies have been deriding the rebels as "Five white guys," a play on comments Pelosi made earlier this year referring to the five male leaders involved in immigration reform talks.

ADVERTISEMENT.Rep., a Pelosi detractor, has urged Fudge to mount a serious challenge.

"I'm still thinking about it," Fudge, a fellow Pelosi critic, told CNN on Thursday night as she stood outside her Capitol office.

Pelosi has been working aggressively to shore up support from the CBC, meeting with the powerful faction Wednesday morning at the Democratic National Committee headquarters.

CBC Chairman predicted that many caucus members would flip their support from Pelosi to Fudge if she decided to run.

"I'm glad to see that Marcia is thinking about it," said Rep., a prominent Pelosi detractor.

Richmond said he plans to talk with Fudge about her plans on Thursday night, noting the pair gets dinner every night with Clyburn and Rep.Officially throwing her name into the ring could also open up Fudge to attacks.
