The Catholic Scandal Is More About Power Than About Sex

You have already read the sorry details about "Uncle Ted," his beach house sleepovers with seminarians, the cuddling and groping, all while Theodore McCarrick moved up the clerical ladder, reaping power and influence.

The Most Rev. Vincent Paglia, of recent Catholic memory, provided dress rehearsal for the current scandal.

Sipe's studies led him to believe that homosexual priests were no more likely than straight ones to break vows of celibacy.

More profound, is at work-the arrogance of power.

Mussolini's Lateran Treaty did the gospels no favor when it made the Vatican a sovereign state, a power unto itself with a swelling roster of bureaucratic functionaries and career dignitaries who forget they are priests, not pashas.

One detail of the 2003 murder in prison of defrocked priest John J. Geoghan, a serial sex abuser, applies here.

Exaggerated, Geoghan's egoism reflected a clerical mindset that views laity as little more than constituents of a church that is contained in its clergy.
