Interior releases detailed proposal for Alaska petroleum reserve

The Interior Department yesterday released a sweeping plan that will decide the future management of oil and gas development, wildlife conservation, hunting and recreation in the nation's largest contiguous block of public lands.
The Bureau of Land Management for the first time is proposing a single management plan for the 23-million-acre National Petroleum Reserve in northwest Alaska, known as NPR-A.
The federally managed reserve, which is roughly the size of Indiana, has been referred to as a Disneyland for wildlife including caribou and migratory waterfowl. But as the name suggests, it is also home to significant deposits of untapped oil and natural gas.
The BLM's draft integrated activity plan will determine which areas are appropriate for oil and gas leasing and, in some cases, what measures are needed to protect surface resources. It also evaluates whether more lands should be designated as special areas off limits to drilling and whether BLM should recommend Congress designate up to a dozen new wild and scenic rivers, which would preserve their free-flowing state..
