Education & Things

Some tricky things about Common Core.  Quote:  "When it comes to the Common Core, the familiar talking points offered up by advocates deserve close scrutiny. Advocates aren’t necessarily lying, but they’ve relied upon half-truths and exaggerations that they’ve passed off as fact. As states reassess the Common Core, advocates should be challenged to offer more than stirring rhetoric and grandiose claims. As much as Common Core boosters celebrate “evidence,” they ought to be able to provide something more than, “We’re smart, and here’s what we think.”   http://www.nationalreview.com/article/386911/common-cores-five-big-half-truths-frederick-m-hess

The evidence for Common Core.  Where is it?  Quote:  "It’s all too common: The backers of a broad-based political movement claim their cause is steeped in evidence, but a perusal of the research reveals more hope than substance. The Common Core education standards are a good example. As I noted last week, George Washington University’s compendium of 60+ research papers on Common Core included just two focused on the standards’ impact on student achievement, and the results were mixed at best."   And, "The people who developed and validated the Common Core have themselves acknowledged its weak evidence base."  So why are we spending millions and billions implementing it?  And why are we turning our kids into experimental test subjects?  http://www.nationalreview.com/agenda/386928/common-core-validation-committee-member-nobody-thought-there-was-sufficient-evidence

Another example of  nonsensical Common Core instruction.  This one from 5th grade vocabulary instruction.   http://eaglerising.com/8517/common-cored-pretty/

Common Core math.  What a mess.   http://eaglerising.com/8537/math-adventures-common-core/

This school's administration is absent any semblance of common sense.   http://dailysignal.com/2014/09/09/insane-reason-girl-forced-d-c-public-schools/?
