CVPH lays off 17 as part of fiscal belt-tightening
PLATTSBURGH — CVPH Medical Center has handed pink slips to 17 employees. President Russ Abarr said the plant shut down last week, resulting in the layoff of 40 employees. "We've been looking at what we can do and trying to avoid it," Abarr said. 102 Utah miners laid off because of 'war on coal,' company says
EAST CARBON, Carbon County — A Utah coal company owned by a vocal critic of President Barack Obama has laid off 102 miners. The layoffs at the West Ridge Mine are effective immediately, according to UtahAmerican Energy Inc., a subsidiary of Murray Energy Corp. U.S. Cellular will sell markets including Chicago to units of Sprint Nextel Corp. for $480 million. The move will result in 980 job cuts at U.S. Cellular, with 640 in the Chicago area, according to a spokeswoman. Career Education to cut 900 jobs, close 23 campuses (Illinois)
Career Education announced Thursday that it is cutting 900 jobs and closing 23 campuses as it continues to battle with declining enrollment. The Schaumburg-based for-profit education provider reported the cuts when it released its third-quarter loss of $33.1 million. Last year the company posted a $10.6 million profit during the same quarter. Third-quarter revenue dropped 22 percent to $332.8 million from $428.4 million. Vestas Wind Systems is aiming to sell a stake of as much as 20 percent and shed another 3,000 off its headcount, more than doubling the number of jobs it plans to eliminate by 2013. AKRON, Ohio -- FirstEnergy expects to cut up to 400 jobs by 2016 as it struggles to stay profitable in a lackluster economy that has led to continued low demand and low power prices.
