Jobless rate up in 27 states, down in 11 in June; payroll jobs up in 29 states, down in 21

In June, 27 states had over-the-month unemployment rate increases, 11 states and the District of Columbia had decreases, and 12 states had no change. Nonfarm payroll employment increased in 29 states and the district and decreased in 21 states.

In June, 1,317 mass layoff actions affected 131,406 workers

In June, employers took 1,317 mass layoff actions involving 131,406 workers. Mass layoff events decreased by 63 from May, while associated initial claims increased by 1,215.

Consumer Price Index

July 17, 2012
On a seasonally adjusted basis, the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers was unchanged in June after declining 0.3 percent in May. The index for all items less food and energy rose 0.2 percent in June, the same increase as in May. Full text: (HTML) (PDF)

Employment Cost Index

Wages and salaries and benefit costs for civilian workers rose 0.5 percent, seasonally adjusted, from December 2011 to March 2012. Over the year, compensation rose 1.9 percent, wages and salaries 1.7 percent, and benefits 2.7 percent. Full text: (HTML) (PDF)

Employment Situation

Nonfarm payroll employment continued to edge up in June (+80,000), and the unemployment rate was unchanged at 8.2 percent. Professional and business services added jobs, and employment in other major industries changed little over the month. Full text: (HTML) (PDF)

Producer Price Index

July 13, 2012
The Producer Price Index for finished goods increased 0.1 percent in June. Prices for finished goods moved down 1.0 percent in May and declined 0.2 percent in April. The index for finished goods less foods and energy moved up 0.2 percent. Full text: (HTML) (PDF)

Productivity and Costs

Productivity declined 0.9 percent in the nonfarm business sector in the first quarter 2012; unit labor costs rose 1.3 percent (seasonally adjusted annual rates). In manufacturing, productivity grew 5.2 percent and unit labor costs fell 4.9 percent. Full text: (HTML) (PDF)

Real Earnings

Real average hourly earnings rose 0.2 percent in June, seasonally adjusted, due to a 0.3 percent gain in average hourly earnings combined with an unchanged CPI-U. Real average weekly earnings rose 0.5 percent over the month. Full text: (HTML) (PDF)

U.S. Import and Export Price Indexes

July 12, 2012
U.S. import prices fell 2.7 percent in June, following a 1.2 percent decrease in May. Lower prices for both fuel and nonfuel imports contributed to the overall decline. U.S. export prices fell 1.7 percent in June after a 0.4 percent drop the previous month. Full text: (HTML) (PDF)
